Unlike natural wonders of the world many man-made from the past come down to us in fragments. Such is the case with Persepolis, capital of ancient Persia, a pre-Christian rival with Athens for the title of "crowning achievement" of ancient civilization. Sacked and burned by Alexander the Great in 330 BC and then ravaged by time, it has taken the dedicated work of successive generations of archaeologists to reconstruct the once mighty city.
