These days despite Rivera's towering reputation as one of Mexico's greatest artists and a brilliant political mural painter, Frida too is a household name. She was born on the outskirts of Mexico City in 1907, to a German Jewish father and a devoutly catholic mother of Spanish descent. At six she contracted polio, but the resulting withered leg was overshadowed in 1925 when she was seriously injured in a bus crash.
