Between 1934 and 1963, Alcatraz Island in San Francisco bay was a high security prison. With the very cold waters acting as a natural isolating barrier, the Rock as the island is known, was home to some of America's toughest and most infamous criminals. Among those who took up residence there were "Scarface" Al Capone, Roy Gardner, last of the lone bad men of the old west, Alvin Karpis, kidnapper, bank robber and murderer, to name just a few.
