News of the war of 1812 was received at Fort George. Fort George was the British headquarters at the beginning of the war, a place where the First Nation peoples met, and where the Canadian Militia were called out. During the war, Fort George and Newark were destroyed during the war. After the war, Newark was rebuilt, renamed Niagara, and eventually became Niagara on the Lake.
