Shortly after the War of 1812, the British commissioned a the Rideau Canal be built as a way to help defend invasions into Canada. It was to be used by the military as a secure route for transporting supplies and information between Montreal and the British Naval base in Kingston, Ontario. After the canal was opened, its primary purpose became a transportation route for goods and for linking communities.
