To further fortify their defenses along the Rideau Canal, the British built Fort Frederick. The fort is built in layers of defense including earthworks to absorb incoming artilery, batteries of guns, a curtain wall, and the main tower with gun platforms. The tower itself also has layers of defense including a draw bridge, tower base projections for small arms defense, and guns that fire carronades.
