Toronto is built around the original site of Fort York. Fort York was attacked by the Americans in the War of 1812 and captured. The Americans burned the Parliament buildings and the house of the Lieutenant Governor. In retaliation for these burnings, later in the war, the British attacked Washington DC and burned the House of Congress and the White House. After the attack on Fort York, the fort was rebuilt and seven of the eight oldest buildings on the site remain today.
