Although the War of 1812 was over, the British were convinced the Americans would again attack Kingston, which was the British military naval base on Lake Ontario. After building the Rideau Canal, the British built Fort Henry, the Citadel of Upper Canada. It was the nucleus of the protection for Kingston harbour.
