Kara and Dalmar explain the science behind carbonation. Put a handful of raisins in a glass, and fill the glass with soda. The raisins are more dense then the soda, so they sink initially. Then, the bubbles from the carbonation carry them to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the raisins sink again, and the cycle continues.
