This lesson focuses on circles and the number pi. Student finds the perimeter of squares and regular hexagons both inscribed in and circumscribed about a circle. They then use the radius and diameter to show that the circumference of a circle is a little more than 3 times the diameter, thus deriving an approximate value of pi. They then find that the ratio of circumference to diameter is always approximately 3.14. Students use an approximate value for pi (3.14) to calculate various measures for circles. They then solve real-world problems involving the distance traveled by a wheel and the perimeter of a slice of cake.
