At the end of this activity, students should be able to estimate the oxidizing and reducing properties of chemical elements on the basis of their position in the electrochemical series, use the electrochemical series to predict the direction of displacement of metals from solutions of their salts by other metals, use the electrochemical series to identify metals that will displace hydrogen from acids, estimate the oxidizing and reducing properties of chemical species from their position in the electrochemical series, estimate the feasibility of a redox reaction using the position of the reactants in the electrochemical series and predict whether a particular substance can be used for the oxidation of another substance under standard conditions.
