At the end of this activity, students should be able to define acidic and alkaline buffers, describe quantitatively how buffers work, calculate the pH of a buffer solution, calculate the pH changes resulting from the addition of strong acids/bases to buffer solutions, determine the pH range of a buffer based on Ka and Kb constants and calculate the amounts of acid/base and salt required to prepare a buffer solution of specified pH.
