The film explores the colonization of land and water in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan, and the evolution of the boreal forest. After the glaciers retreated, lichens and fungi colonized the bare rock and plant life began. Close inspection of the lichens, fungi and mosses reveals some unexpected environmental warning signals.
