At the end of this activity, students should be able to be able to explain the unique properties of the element carbon, understand the terms ‘homologous series’ and ‘isomers’, know the basic structural features of alkanes and cycloalkanes, know how to name alkanes, alkyl groups and cycloalkanes according to the IUPAC rules and know how to draw structural formulas for alkanes and cycloalkanes and know the basic physical properties of alkanes and understand the influence of intermolecular forces on the physical properties of alkanes.
