By 1870, new immigrants William Gooderham and James Worts were the largest producers of whiskey in the world with a waterfront operation that gave the company massive expansion potential when the First World War broke out. It put its success to good use, building Little Trinity Church and setting up the Bank of Toronto. The new Bank president James Austin moved his family to Spadina House, in what was then, the countryside.
