Sparked by the Michael Brown shooting and the #BlackLivesMatter movement, for over three years, thirty-four stories, poems, essays, and visual art pieces were gathered, nurtured, and polished into this unique collection of youth writing. Asking questions such as Black like who? And looking at the warrior marks and pride that come with being melanated, and strategies for staying rooted as Black youth, Black Like We looks at institutions like the education system, the New Jim Crow prison industrial complex, and systemic racism problematizing how they criminalize Black youth bodies and attempt to fashion them as sites of violence. Black Like We seeks to disrupt these silencing forces on Black youth and instead mobilizes a variety of voices to assert that Black youth lives and stories matter in Toronto, Canada, and throughout the world.
