President Woodrow Wilson attempted to keep America out of the war in Europe to focus on domestic affairs. After the sinking of the Lusitania and the discovery of the Zimmerman Telegram, he was forced to break his promise to the American people. In 1919, American soldiers came home to a changing American culture, filled with wealth, new ideologies, and freedoms from the automobile. The period of prosperity came to an end in 1929, leaving the weight of the impending depression on the shoulders of newly elected President Hebert Hoover.
