In freewriting, students write continuously: they begin with a prompt and keep their pen or pencil moving throughout the entire duration of a freewrite. They do not stop to question or censor themselves; they do not concern themselves with spelling, punctuation, capitalization or grammar; they do not let critical thoughts creep into their freewriting time. This book shows teachers how to use freewriting to help students write well and more, regardless of the grade level, the subject, the time of day, or the time of year. It is not a difficult process to implement, and yet it makes a significant difference in teacher attitudes, student confidence and ultimately, in students' writing abilities. It is not the be all and the end all of writing in the classroom; yet it is an effective tool to enhance the learning process.
