Dense metropolitan areas can be as much as 3C hotter than rural areas because of the amount of buildings, blacktop, people and cars. The City of Toronto instituted a bylaw in 2009 requiring every new building to have a green roof - a roof composed of plants that helps dissipate the accumulated heat. By 2100, Toronto will experience 65 days in a year where the temperature exceeds 30C.
