Limestone is predominantly calcium carbonate. It is a sedimentary rock, which has been formed in warm shallow water - usually from the skeletons of creatures and shells, which are pressed together over long periods of time to form rock. Malham Tarn in North Yorkshire is a well-known limestone landscape, which is popular with visitors for its picturesque landscape and spectacular caves. In this film, Adrian Pickles the Head of Malham Tarn Field Centre explains different limestone formations and the natural processes that have contributed to their formation over many millions of years. He also speaks about the importance of conservation and preserving our natural heritage. This film provides a comprehensive coverage of geological and geographical processes, and makes an interesting and useful resource for GCSE and FE level students of geography.
