When the Twin Towers were attacked on September 11, 2001, students had just started their day at Stuyvesant High School, a few blocks away. Through intimate conversations with eight individuals who were there, In the Shadow of the Towers: Stuyvesant High on 9/11 offers a unique perspective on that tragic day. Directed and produced by Emmy®-winner Amy Schatz, the 31-minute documentary weaves footage of the attack with compelling commentary from student eyewitnesses, who, as young teenagers, found themselves in the heart of the danger zone, fleeing debris, and with a harrowing journey home. Now adults, many from immigrant families, they speak feelingly about the backlash against minority communities that followed the attack and the deep friendships with classmates that got them through. A story about how it felt to be a young person at Ground Zero, the film explores the ways in which September 11 shaped these students' lives and their hopes and dreams for America, and how it continues to shape the world around us. Told thoughtfully and with great poignancy, the film is deeply resonant today, connecting to the current national conversation about America, racism, and the treatment of immigrants.
