John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum was created in the 1960s to protect the Tinicum marshes, some of the few remaining wetlands in Pennsylvania. Restoration efforts has increased the acreage of the wetlands and has made a home for hundreds of migrating bird species.
