Known as a soldier statesman, like his friend and colleague Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower served his country for more than 50 years first in the military and then as the president. He oversaw the invasion of Normandy during World War II as a four-star general, ended the Korean War as one of his first actions as president, and called for nuclear disarmament as part of his crusade for world peace.
