The number of people in the United States infected with a sexually transmitted disease has been rising annually for many years with the most new cases appearing in young people. Often STDs show few or no symptoms early on, but they can have serious long-term health consequences. The key to staying healthy is understanding how STDs spread and how to avoid them through abstinence, or, if sexually active, regular testing, practicing safe sex, and talking with one's partners.
