The British North America Act, Canada's first constitution, was passed by the British Parliament in 1867. During the 20th century, Canada expanded and matured as a nation while becoming more and more independent from Great Britain. Finally, on April 17, 1982, Canada became a fully sovereign nation and when Prime Minister Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth II signed the Constitution Act which contained the new Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
