Mildred fell in love with Richard Loving, and they were married in Washington, DC, but when they returned to their hometown in Virginia, the laws against interracial marriage put them both in jail in a way that was meant to teach a lesson to the rest of the community. Their three children were frightened, but the husband and wife faught against the unfair law all the way to the Supreme Court and won.
