This tragedy by Shakespeare centers around the young King Hamlet of Denmark, who has returned home to discover his father was poisoned by his uncle Claudius, who has assumed the throne. Young Hamlet seeks to avenge the murder of his father, taking his guards Barnardo and Horatio into his confidence. Fearful, Claudius plots to kill Hamlet, but is outwitted by him. In the meantime, Ophelia, once the object of Hamlet's affection, has gone mad with grief from Hamlet's rejection of her, and is found drowned. Her brother Laertes seeks to avenge her death in a duel with Hamlet. And thus the tip of the iceberg of intrigue, cross and double cross, betrayal, and tragedy and death. This most morose of Shakespeare's works counts among his greatest.
