Concussions are a common occurrence for players of contact sports, such as football. Roughly 20 percent of high school athletes who play them will suffer a concussion in a given year. They can occur during any athletic activity, though, and about 50 percent of the time they go undiagnosed or unreported. This serious head injury requires proper treatment and recovery time. Repeated concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition only recently recognized as a grave risk to athletes. Concussions aren't the only sports-related injury high school students face. Breaks, strains, and overuse injuries all commonly occur in student-athletes. It's important to understand the risks, how to prevent injuries, and most importantly how to recognize and treat them when they occur.
