This book is shorter than Dostoyesky’s other works and less complex for the reader new to this author. The Gambler recounts the tale of Alexey Ivanovitch as he loses control of his life and his addiction to gambling becomes a self-destructive downward spiral of betting and loss. Dostoyevsky’s psychological portrait of Ivanovitch stands as the archetype of a character broken by addiction and loss of self control.
