This story first appeared in 1860 and concerns the life of Philip Pirrip, or “Pip”. Pip is an orphan and simple village boy being brought up by simple and kindly village people, most notably his putative father, the gentle blacksmith Joe Gargery. Pip comes into contact with the house of Miss Havisham and her ward Estella. Pip falls in love with Estella and hopes to become a gentleman, despite his modest heritage. Alas, one day, money and expectations of wealth and stature arrive for Pip, as he becomes the ward of a mysterious benefactor. Pip goes to London. He hides his connection with the humble Joe Gargery. Misfortune ensues -- the penalty for pride. Estella eludes his grasp. Lesson are learned and redemption arrives. This is a story of yearning, loss, guilt, foolish pride, and the rewards of humility.
