A short story written in the first person, the narrator is a man who has just gotten delivery of his new car. Met at the station by his chauffeur, Perkins, the man insists on driving himself, despite warnings that the gears function differently and the car handles unfamiliarly. The man loses control of the vehicle as it speeds over treacherous terrain, and Perkins urges him to jump out. The ending has the man meeting a dead friend….. The story explores the themes of companionship, friendship and enduring loyalty.
