Science has quite literally transformed the world. It revolutionized the way people dress, eat, learn, communicate, work, travel, fight disease, play, and make war. Today more than two hundred separate scientific disciplines exist, and thousands of colleges and other schools regularly train new scientists to maintain and operate those disciplines. In addition to providing most of the common conveniences of everyday life, scientific research and development has repeatedly solved global challenges and problems, benefiting humanity as a whole.
