Methamphetamine, also called speed and crank, is a powerfully addictive drug. Often referred to simply as meth, it is a synthetic upper or stimulant that revs up the user's metabolism. The rush of pleasure it delivers upon first use can be overwhelming. It leads a person to seek that same feeling again and again. Its relatively low cost and wide availability on the street attract those on the lookout for a cheap high. But the threat of addiction-sometimes after only one or two hits-makes using meth extremely risky. Meth addicts often lead disordered lives and resort to crime to feed their habit. Overcoming long-term addiction requires a painful withdrawal process and months or years of clinical help.
