Forty-five days after Lincoln's election, South Carolina secedes from the Union. In less than a month, six more states secede and the Confederate State of America, or C.S.A. is founded. On April 12, 1861, the southern batteries shell Ft. Sumter, which starts the Civil War. Losses at Ft. Sumter and Manassas worry the North until General Grant turns the tide at Filson. Their major battles were at Shiloh to Antietam.
