President Woodrow Wilson's idealistic hopes for world peace through collective security clash at Versailles with the harsh old-world realpolitik of Europe, which seeks to punish Germany for the First World War. The resultant punitive treaty sows the seeds of World War II. Wilson returns from Paris to fight for ratification of his League of Nations, but his ambitions are thwarted by irreconcilable isolationist resistance and his unwillingness to compromise.
