Kisiskâciwan: Indigenous Voices from Where the River Flows Swiftly, a recent anthology is a significant contribution to Indigenous literature by Indigenous writers and storytellers. 'kisiskâciwan', which means it flows swiftly in Cree is where Saskatchewan derives its name but also expresses the sentiment of the work with the ongoing flow of traditions from past into present. This work is a search for Indigenous oral and written traditions. And while some were found in libraries and archives many others were found through conversations with storytellers, writers, elders, and artists. This book gives voice to some of the countless stories. Oral traditions and the memories of people have come through history and this work, while cognizant of the colonial transformation is also about the history of the strength of individuals and communities, resistance and empowerment, reclaiming traditions and ceremonies, retaking control of education, celebrating culture, identity, family, land rights and conservation, new forms of art and knowing.This anthology echoes the past mixing with the present in new voices of contemporary writers, storytellers and communities.
