In a comic take on the house-that-Jack-built formula, a little boy floats down the river in his own boat supervised from the shore to study the creatures he finds. His efforts to net a fish are unsuccessful until an owl's loud hoot sets of a startled chain reaction amongst the creatures, ending in the fish flying right into Ben's bucket. The book concludes with eight information pages about ecology and the creatures of a northern river ecosystem.
