In January 2022, truckers from across Canada drove to Ottawa in protest against government COVID-19 mandates requiring them to vaccinate in order to cross the U.S.-Canada border. Thousands of protestors and hundreds of semis took over the downtown core of Ottawa. Others blockaded major border crossings, bringing traffic and trade to a halt. It led to the government bringing in the never before used Emergency Measures Act to remove them.
