When the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan after the retreat of American soldiers in August 2021, they proclaimed a newer, fairer regime. But still to be determined is what it means for the women of Afghanistan. Twenty years earlier, under harsh Islamic law, women lost their personhood. They were forced to don burqas, could not seek education or employment, and their movements were restricted. Beatings and sometimes death were the punishment for disobedience. Afghan women want to know if those restrictions will return.
