A year after COVID-19 was first identified, it had spread across the globe, resulting in more than 73 million cases and over 1.6 million deaths. Health experts agreed the only way through the pandemic was with a vaccine. Scientists and pharmaceutical companies worldwide began the research. Now, as those groundbreaking vaccines are being distributed, many people are ready and eager to roll up their sleeves to get immunized against the virus. But a sizeable minority are not as keen. Some will never get vaccinated. Still others say they are waiting to see what happens with the first batches and want to learn more about possible side effects. These are the vaccine-hesitant. They are the ones health officials want to convince that the vaccine is safe and necessary.
