Thousands of dead satellites and other bits of "space junk" are orbiting Earth. This debris poses a threat to the satellite network. NASA and the U.S. military are tracking the larger pieces, but even a tiny fleck of paint could punch a hole through a satellite. Many scientists say the real solution to the problem of space junk is to avoid leaving it behind in the first place.
