Nickel resists corrosion at high temperatures and is used to plate other metals to protect them. It's found in coins, wires, gas turbines, rocket engines and stainless steel, among other uses. Elon Musk, the CEO of electric car company Tesla, made a stir when he announced that he needs nickel for lithium-ion batteries and urged mining companies to extract it sustainably.
