When COVID-19 came to Canada we saw a large number of deaths. Four out of five of those deaths were among the elderly housed in long term care homes. The situation in Ontario and Quebec was so serious that the government called in the Canadian military to assist in the worst-hit facilities. The military produced a report that shocked many. It shed light on the fact that the weakest and most vulnerable members of our society were dying not just because of COVID-19 but due to neglect and a poor system of care. It's been criticized for years but it took all those deaths to expose the true failings of our elderly care system. Will we learn from this and make it better?
