Iron is a nutrient needed for life of all kinds. In our blood it carries oxygen through our bodies. The core of the Earth is liquid iron, which renders the planet a large magnet and causes compasses to point to magnetic north. It's a strong metal that's been used for over 5,000 years and is still found in almost all structures today because of its strength. This Element of Surprise segment features the following experts: Keiko Hattori, Professor, Geochemistry and Mineral Deposits, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Ottawa, and Emily Albright, PhD candidate, Chemistry, Queen's University.
