Every year, millions of people celebrate the Lunar New Year in different parts of the world, including right here in Canada. Although it's commonly referred to as the Chinese New Year, it's actually the new year for anyone who follows the lunar calendar - as opposed to the Gregorian calendar, which we follow in North America. Many Asian countries and cultures other than China follow the lunar calendar, such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. The official holiday is celebrated on a different day every year. In Chinese culture, the festival is celebrated for 15 days. Much like New Year's Eve on December 31, Chinese people count down to the next year, have fireworks and celebrate with family. There are a few differences, too. For example, children receive gifts of money in red envelopes.
