On September 16, 2022, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini died under suspicious circumstances in Tehran. She had been arrested by the country's so-called religious morality police for not wearing her hijab, or headscarf, correctly. Amini's death sparked condemnation both in Iran and across the globe. It's considered the most serious challenge to the ruling Islamic authorities in Iran in the past 40 years.
