A memoir of the people and challenges that shaped the life and career of Canada's most decorated Indigenous athlete. Trottier grew up in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, the son of a Cree father and an Irish-Canadian mother. Although a gifted athlete from a young age, Trottier was not immune to the sting of racism, but his mother always made sure that he was proud of his Indigenous heritage. Trottier shares stories about family, friends, teammates, and coaches, the lessons that he has learned from them, and the profound impact they have had in shaping the person he has become. The book looks at all aspects of Trottier's life, from the incredible highs (life growing up on the farm and the importance of family and tradition; championship glory with the Islanders) to the challenges (being released from the Islanders; adjusting to life after hockey; post-playing financial struggles; depression).
