Roy Ratnavel, a CI Financial executive, started his career in a mailroom after escaping ethnic violence in Sri Lanka. At 17, he was imprisoned and tortured for being Tamil. A family friend, ‘Uncle’ Fernando, rescued him and returned him to his family. Understanding the danger, Ratnavel’s father sought refuge for him in Canada. After showing his scars as proof of danger, Ratnavel was soon on a plane to Canada. His father was shot two days later.
