Tiling (or tessellation) is covering a plane surface with shapes that fit together without overlaps or gaps. Hamza examines repeating patterns of shapes on a quilt and a shower wall; tiling patterns also occur in natural objects such as pineapples, honeycomb and a turtle shells. The investigators find other examples: brick paths, tire tread patterns, and a soccer ball. Tessellation patterns may be made with repetitions of one shape or with a mixture of triangles, hexagons and squares. Different patterns may be made with shapes through reflection, rotation, or translation.
