Cleopatra is often depicted wearing eyeliner. In ancient Egypt, eyeliner was worn for fashion, but they also believed that the gods would protect them while they wore it. The eyeliner contained lead salts that prevented bacterial infection, but lead is very toxic and it often made them sick.
